Location: Wankerville, UK | Its time to retire my P4 2.6 Ghz, thought it is probably one of the most reliable Intel systems I've ever had.
I use it as a media server and would like to use it for video recording / viewing.
Currently I have an ATI 650 wonder PCI. Going to be getting a new one maybe not sure at the moment.
Any suggestions, reviews, opinions or sales pitches are welcome.
I was thinking of some sort of AMD Quad Core, also will be having to get new RAM and PCIe Video Card.
It's a very solid machine but don't want to build an entire unit or need one.
Looking for raw power, and value. |

ATI Radeon 5770. Affordable DX11 graphics. |

Location: Sterling Heights, MI | the AMD's are cheaper then Intel's right now, I watched a podcast about this, They built a gaming PC for around 700$, excluding Mouse, keyboard, monitor.
I think you should get a DX11 Card for sure though. |

Location: Malibu, California | I went to Frys electronics (fried) and got an AMD phenom quad + random mother board, 8gig ram, quadrofx580, and stupid win7 all for $700 and Im using it to do professional 3D rendering, so that should give you a cheap solution. |

Location: Wankerville, UK | ATI or NVIDIA? I have always been an Nvidia fan, well not always, but not the point, that's a whole different thread. I do have an ATI card seems to be ok to me, but after talking to a few friends that were ATI fan boys they have been switching back to Nvidia since AMD bought them out and have not done much with them. But I see ATI is the online doing DirectX 11... |

Location: Philadelphia, PA | If you like Nvidia cards I'd wait for their DX11 offering. Prolly coming in March but who knows with them. They've delayed this card so many times. ATI will have a refresh card available around the same time so I'd hold off on buying anything. Prices on the current DX11 cards will fall. |

Location: Philadelphia, PA | That looks like good stuff. I love Asus motherboards but Gigabyte has been good to me too. I'm not up to snuff on the new AMD CPU's so I can't really comment on that. I use Corsair mem myself so I recommend it. |

Also I see you're buying a media extender? I didn't read much about it but the Xbox 360 does that also. Mine works just fine for me and it will save you $$ if you have a 360 allready. |

Location: Wankerville, UK | Not a media extender, well I guess you could say it is in a way, but what it does is take Clear Qam signals, unencrypted signal from cable companies, and then you can view then on your PC, it's just a very good one from what I have read.
Will be using it as an external tuner, I can get all the music channels, espn 1 and 2, discovery, smithsonian all the local channels, and 10-15 more channels, all at no cost, just plug in a tuner that can receive Clear Qam signals. |

Location: Malibu, California | my card is nvidia. I am waiting for the mac nvidia quadrofx 4800 to go down significantly in price, right now it's $1400 average... sucks... I need that card pretty badly to run Autodesk Smoke on OSX. Yeah Seipher 8gb of ram. My mac tower has 64gb of ram it cost like $800 just for that :-/ so yeah long term investments... but it helps me do what I love. |
